About Marquita
I've been writing songs since my mid teens. I'd been a poet for as long as I can remember, but was always disappointed that all my poems rhymed. In the late 60s/early 70s it just wasn't cool if your poetry rhymed! It wasn't until I learned how to play the guitar at age 15 that I realized that when you take poems that rhyme and play the guitar at the same time you've created a song. The first songs I played when I first started on guitar were such classics as "Jimmy Crack Corn and I Don't Care," and "Camptown Races." (I writhe with embarrassment at the memory.) The first song I ever wrote was also a classic entitled, "Stripey the Little Lost Lizard." Don't ask!
Throughout college in the mid to late 70s I wrote many songs and played on the campus coffeehouse circuit. The owner of a small local recording company offered to help me record my material, but I declined. My academic studies had nothing whatever to do with music or anything else creative for that matter, so when I graduated and went off to pursue a graduate degree, in essence I derailed my musical career.
Although my songwriting has never been as prolific as it was during my college years, I've continued to write. Over the years I've written and performed songs at weddings and the occasional special event, but never very seriously or consistently. And even though I've always received very positive reviews, I have been too sacred to think seriously about what to do with my music. Until now...
Now at 50 years old, I've decided that life in fact has not passed me by, and that now is as good a time as any to begin to share my music with a broader audience. Because the truth is, I still have a lot to say. And now is the time for me to begin to speak, sing, act from my heart. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
